About Tongwynlais Temperance Band

Tongwynlais Temperance Band

The band, originally hailing from the small village of Tongwynlais on the outskirts of Cardiff, was founded in 1888 by banding enthusiasts from the local Melingriffith works. Initially known as the Brooker’s Band, they soon became a part of the thriving local temperance movement, eventually becoming the Tongwynlais Temperance Silver Band, although in the 1920’s the band rehearsed in the long room of the local Lewis Arms public house!

Over the coming decades the band grew consistently in terms of its levels of performance. Since 2010 the band has represented Wales in the Championship Section at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain on no less than eight occasions, whilst also enjoying appearances at the British Open and European Championship.

Whilst the band prides itself on remaining a top-flight contesting brass band, it has certainly not forgotten its humble roots. The band actively works to develop the next generation of musicians through the Tongwynlais Music Academy (delivered in partnership with local tutors) and can be regularly seen at events and concerts within its home community of North Cardiff.
